Prior Knowledge

It is fundamentally important that children are always building on and embedding previous knowledge, skills and understanding to ensure cumulative fluency across all subjects. Only by building on previous learning can children assimilate new knowledge and make meaningful connections both within and across subjects.

The Prior Knowledge documents track the coverage of curriculum areas across the whole primary phase, from EYFS to Y6. They evidence the deliberate decision making when mapping skills, knowledge, understanding and content. These documents also allow teachers to ensure that the teaching experience is always built upon prior knowledge. By applying the schema theory, old knowledge is linked to and underpins new knowledge.
